                                                                        General Information

Whitney High School uses various means to keep the community informed. The Parent Foundation has parent groups for Indian, Korean, Chinese, Latino, and Filipino parents. Translation services are available in Spanish and Korean on the school campus and also in Mandarin, Cambodian and Vietnamese upon special request through the district. The Grade Level Advisors are available daily during the 10-month school year from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30p.m., and GLAs rotate to provide services to all students at snack and lunch in the office as well as outside on school grounds.

Throughout the school year, Whitney offers these following workshops and conferences in the form of Advisory Councils, Back-to-School Night, College Nights, Alumni College Night, Classroom Presentations, Financial Aid Night, Freshman Healthy Choices Workshops, New Student Orientation, Open House, Parent Meetings, Registration, School Tours, Senior Camp Retreat, and Student Assemblies.

Whitney provides on-site and school-wide announcements via bulletin boards, daily announcement, auto-dialer, district mail, guidance emails, personal appointments, phone calls, school marquee, this website, Naviance Succeed counseling online portfolio program, and homeroom video clips.
Cell Phones and Electronic Devices:
Since the campus does not have pay phones, students are allowed to have cell phones and other electronic devices. These devices are not to interfere with classroom instruction and will be confiscated if used during class time. Confiscated ones are turned in to the SIA offices and are released to parents on the first offense.

Textbooks:
Students are required to have their student ID cards for textbooks. Griselda Hidalgo (in the library) is issuing books to students at the beginning of each year. Students are responsible for any books issued to them and must pay for textbooks should they become damaged or lost. Textbooks should be covered at all times and students may receive a detention for books that are not covered.

Finance Office:
The ASB Bookkeeper, Sharon McKee, is located in the Finance Office next to the Attendance Office. Students who are club fundraisers should turn in all money collected to the Financial Office daily. Students should go to the Financial Office for the following:
• buy tickets to events
• turn in money from fundraisers
• replace ID cards
• buy yearbooks
• turn in fair share donations for athletics
• turn in receipts to be reimbursed for authorized expenses.

Whitney High School Website:
The Whitney website features regularly updated information about college news and other important events. The website address is www.whitneyhs.org.

Technology:
Students are encouraged to use the laptops, computers, and other equipment available on campus for school related projects. Students are expected to be careful with the equipment and to treat it respectfully.
Students are encouraged to sign up for the free schoolwide Naviance Succeed program because this enables them to receive e-mail from school personnel about important news and events. For more information, see Mary Pinedo or Suzanne Campbell in the Connection Center and/or the Grade Level Advisors.
Students who misuse or mistreat the equipment will not be allowed future access and will be financially responsible for damaged machines. Students who access inappropriate websites or use school machines for other illegitimate purposes get suspended, possibly arrested, and possibly recommended for expulsion.

Lockers:
Every student is assigned a locker at the beginning of the year. Students, who forget their combinations or cannot open lockers, should ask the Student Intervention Assistants (Joe Cruz and James Gibson). Students should not leave valuable items in their lockers. Students are allowed to decorate their lockers with posters or non-permanent decorations. Lockers are school property and are subject to search. Students who misuse their lockers will lose their privilege for one week (5 days). Repeat offenders will lose their locker completely for one semester.

Rules:
Whitney High School has a progressive discipline program that adheres to the California Ed Code and ABC Unified’s policies concerning student behavior. Students who do not follow the rules will be required to serve detention, which is one hour long two days per week. Students who owe detentions receive a notice that explains the reason for the detention. Students have one week (5 days) to serve the detention. If a student does not serve the detention within the week, the student loses privileges accordingly for one week (5 days). Students who repeatedly violate the rules will lose their permit.
Teachers have the right to assign detentions or suspend. Teachers may allow students to make up work missed during the length of the suspension, but are not required to provide makeup work for students suspended on or off campus.
Reasons for suspension and expulsion as outlined in California Ed Code 48900:
-caused or attempt to cause physical injury to another person
-Possessed a weapon, dangerous object, or item that resembles a weapon
-arranged to sell or buy a controlled substance
-committed or attempted to commit robbery or extortion
-caused or attempted to steal school or private property
-possessed or used tobacco or products containing tobacco
-committed an obscene act or engage in habitual profanity

-disrupted school activities or defied the valid authority of school personnel
-knowingly received stolen property
-possessed an imitation firearm
-committed or attempted to commit sexual harassment, assault or battery
-harassed, threatened or intimidated a pupil

Academic Honesty:
Students are expected to observe academic honesty in all cases. Cheating on homework, daily work, projects, tests etc. will result in an automatic zero on the assignment, parent conference, four hours of detention, and the course grade may be dropped one letter grade. Students who cheat, attempt to cheat, or tamper with teacher grades in any way will be subject to immediate transfer.
