College Career Milestone Project 9th - 12th Grade
Career Project, Career Speakers, and Reflection (9th Grade) Beginning to explore possible career options and opportunities helps students in guiding their future academic choices. Interviewing professionals in a chosen field provides insight as to the demands and expectations of various careers. Exploring careers, attending and participating in guest speaker workshops, and written reflections are part of the freshman experience at Whitney High School. College Research Project (10th Grade) Whitney High School encourages students to choose the colleges/universities that are of particular interest to them. By researching various majors, minors, and specific programs students can make an informed decision by using resources such as Naviance Succeed and participating in informational workshops provided by the Connections Center. The college research project is a milestone required of all sophomore students. College Representative Speaker and Reflection (11th Grade) Every fall, admission office representatives from colleges visit Whitney High School to present informational programs to prospective students and their parents. During these visits, reps meet with interested students in small groups to discuss topics like the academic programs, campus life, financial aid programs, and admission procedures of their college. Juniors are required to attend workshops and write a reflection piece as a milestone requirement. College Admissions Workshop and Interview (12th Grade) Prior to applying for college, seniors participate in a college admissions workshop focusing on holistic review of their college application. Furthermore, writing workshops serve to assist seniors with the college application process if the student chooses to participate. All seniors will undergo an interview process aimed at helping each student logically approach the selection and college application process as well as help them refine basic interview skills and techniques.
